The Great American Eclipse

Back in 1979, Jimmy Carter was President, gas was $0.86 per gallon and a solar eclipse blanketed the Pacific Northwest of the United States.  Many visitors traveled there since it would be the last chance to view a total solar eclipse in the contiguous United States for almost four decades. Now that time has passed and on August 21st the next total solar eclipse will take place.

An Eclipse itself is not a rare occurrence. Every year we have 2 lunar and 2 solar eclipses. What makes this particular eclipse so important is its path across the United States as its route is directly over the area that includes Washington DC.  In addition, this eclipse is taking place during Mercury Retrograde; is aspecting the royal star Regulus, Mars and Uranus.

Dubbed the Great American Eclipse, more than 90% of the Sun will be covered in Washington DC and like it or not, decisions made in the White House have a huge effect on the rest of the world. In ancient times, eclipses were feared as being an omen for the death of the King (represented by the Sun) as the Moon blots out the Sun’s rays. Ancient astrologers believed that Regulus was the most influential of the Royal Stars and events that took place while Regulus was in dominance were amplified and grave, foreshadowing destruction. It is interesting to note that this eclipse casts a shadow over Donald Trump as he happens to have Regulus and Leo both rising in his birth chart and it is conjunct his Mars as well. The next 6 months should bring about some interesting events in Trump’s life and ours too.

We should also pay heed to the other transits in connection with this eclipse. The moon connecting with both Uranus and Mars brings out an abundance of radical (Uranus) and passionate (Mars) energy. Uranus is all about personal freedom and revolution. Moon/Mars is about strategy and instincts are extra-sensitive; there is a super-fast reaction to any perceived outside threat. It can also be a very physical aspect. Mercury retrograde helps to clear the deck of our old self to give us the freedom to move into our true direction.

Solar Eclipses may appear disruptive as they break up blockages in our lives. If we think about the obstacles we face, we can work with the cosmic energy to facilitate change. These eclipses have the power to brush away stale energy, infuse optimism into future plans, and generally pave the way for a very satisfying Autumn.

Here are some tips to keep in mind to use this very powerful energy to is full potential

  • In order to maximize the power of the planets trust your intuition and be as honest as possible. What you say becomes your destiny, so pay attention to your words, your actions and who you spend time with.
  • If you have Leo prominent in your chart your life will undergo significant changes. Look in which house in your natal chart Leo and the Sun (Leo’s Ruler) resides.
